Iran military drills

The chief commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has lauded air defense forces for making significant achievements and enabling the country to deter enemy threats. Major General Hossein Salami made the remarks while inspecting an ongoing large-scale military drill in central Iran. He said the army's air defense forces and the IRGC’s aerospace division have obtained modern systems that put them on the most advance stage of technology. Separately, the commander of IRGC’s aerospace unit said the forces participating in the drill have managed to flawlessly hit a range of UAVs, cruise missiles and other weapons flying at various altitudes and speeds. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said indigenously-built radars, command and control systems and missile systems were also successfully test-launched on the second day of exercises.

West Afghanistan sanctions

Afghanistan's new Taliban government has warned the US and the EU that their pressure tactic through sanctions could trigger a new wave of refugees. Acting foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi issued the warning to Western diplomats at talks in Doha. He said weakening the Afghan government is not in anyone’s interest rather it will undermine global security and cause economic migration. Muttaqi called for an end to existing sanctions in order for banks to operate as usual. Afghanistan is facing financial crunch, with banks running out of cash since the Taliban takeover of the country in mid-August. Taliban officials have held their first face-to-face talks with a joint US-EU delegation in Qatar.

Europe energy crisis

The Russian president has once again rejected accusations that his country is withholding gas supplies to Europe and using energy as a weapon against the West. Vladimir Putin called the allegations nonsense and politically-motivated. He said Moscow is rather expanding gas supplies to Europe and seeking to ease the crisis there. His comments came as concerns grow over soaring gas prices in Europe amid high demand before the winter. Meanwhile, the European Commission has announced a package of measures to alleviate the problem. This includes the approval of tax cuts and the joint purchase of fuel by EU member states.
