Afghan civilian death

New data shows British forces are linked to the death of nearly 300 Afghan civilians including dozens of children. The figures were obtained by a series of freedom of information requests from the Ministry of Defense compensation logs. The numbers show some 2,400 pounds in compensation paid on average for each life lost. The data also revealed that 86 children were among the victims with the youngest recorded civilian victim being just three years old. The information was compiled by Action on Armed Violence charity group following the withdrawal of western forces from Afghanistan last month. The group estimates more than 20,000 civilians were killed or injured by international and Afghan forces during the 20-year conflict in the war-ravaged country.

US Israel support

The US House of Representatives votes overwhelmingly for legislation to provide one-billion-dollars to resupply Israel’s Iron Dome missile system. The measure comes two days after the same funding was removed from a broader spending bill, mostly because of objections from Democrats. However, the new draft advanced from the House on a comfortable 420-to-9 vote. House Speaker Nanci Pelosi said the passage of the bill reflected the great unity in Congress in support of Israel. Some Democrats have recently voiced concerns about Israel's human rights violations against Palestinians and illegal settlement expansion. Republicans quickly labeled those criticisms as anti-Semitic.

"Premature" call

North Korea has dismissed as premature South Korea’s offer of declaring a formal end to the decades-long war between the two sides. The North Korean vice foreign minister added that an end-of-war declaration would have no legal binding force, considering the tensions on the Korean Peninsula. He noted that ending Washington’s hostile policy against Pyongyang will be the most important step in bringing peace and stability to the region. In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly earlier this week, South Korean President Moon Jae-in proposed that the two Koreas, the United States, and possibly China declare the formal end to the 1950 war which is still technically being fought since a ceasefire was declared in 1953.
