6 in 10 Americans say US 'gone off on wrong track': Poll

US President Joe Biden

Nearly 6 in 10 US citizens believe that their country has gone off “the wrong track” under the leadership of US President Joe Biden who is under fire over his withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan, a new poll revealed.

According to a new Politico-Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday, the majority of respondents, 61 percent, announced that they believe their country is on the wrong track, compared to just 39 percent who said the country is “going in the right direction.”

During the past two weeks, Biden has witnessed the harshest attacks from inside and outside the US over the ill-prepared withdrawal from Afghanistan that has brought about immense chaos and confusion to the country after two decades of occupation.

Meanwhile, the latest polls show that the approval rating of the Democratic president has also dropped below 50 percent in August.

This comes as Biden had previously hit 55.1 percent in March and 52.6 percent in July.

The US president, however, has defended his decision to withdraw the US troops, reiterating “it was the unanimous recommendation of the Joint Chiefs and of all of our commanders on the ground to end our airlift mission as planned."

"Their view was that ending our military mission was the best way to protect the lives of our troops, and secure the prospects of civilian departures for those who want to leave Afghanistan in the weeks and months ahead," he added.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of the so-called war on terror. While the invasion ended the Taliban’s rule in the country back then, it is ending with the return of the group to power.

On July 8, Biden asserted that it was “highly unlikely” the Taliban would take control of Afghanistan.

The Office of the Director of US National Intelligence warned in April that the Taliban militants were making gains.

Top American generals had also warned the president that a hasty US withdrawal would lead to the collapse of the Afghan government.

The US president has already acknowledged “this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated.”
