Unlike the low number of COVID-19 infections during the first and second wave of the pandemic in Afghanistan, the country is now witnessing a sharp increase in the number of victims of this killer disease.

Based on official figures, over 5 thousand individuals have lost their lives and nearly 160-thousand positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed so far. The worrying truth is that the number of victims is rising sharply in Afghanistan.

This comes as the Afghan public health ministry blames locals for not paying due attention to health instructions. Facts on the ground also prove that attempts by domestic and international health bodies to convince locals to take the pandemic seriously, have been no to avail.

As Afghanistan suffers from instability in different social, political and security arenas, locals here believe that measures such as slapping a ban on social activities should be associated with other supportive actions by the government in order to convince ordinary people to stay at home.

Let’s not forget that dealing with the 3rd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be a hard task for the government as it needs to simultaneously deal with other challenges mainly the rise of Taliban attacks across the country. Under such circumstances, politicians in Kabul have redoubled their effort to win the hearts and minds of the nation in order to help the government to successfully confront those challenges.
