Iranian FM Zarif in Dublin on third leg of Europe tour

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif (R) and his Irish counterpart Simon Coveney

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has arrived in Dublin on the third leg of his tour of Europe, following his earlier visits to Spain and Italy where he met with the two countries’ top officials.

Arriving in Dublin on Wednesday morning, Zarif has already met with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney.

Back in March, the Irish diplomat visited Tehran for a round of talks with Iranian officials.

On Monday, he met with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio to discuss political and economic aspects of the historical relations between Iran and Italy. This year marks the 160th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“In talks with Italian political & business leaders, agreed on Italy's great advantage in resuming business with Iran,” Zarif said via Twitter on Tuesday.

He also voiced his satisfaction over the good prospects of economic cooperation between Iran and Italy.

According to the foreign minister, given the agreements that were prepared before the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal and the Italian line of credit, there is ground for the resumption of cooperation.

Zarif also met with the Pope during a visit to the Vatican.

As part of his European tour, the chief Iranian diplomat was also expected to visit Austria, where high-profile talks are underway to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, but he canceled his visit in protest at Vienna’s flying of the Israeli regime’s flag over government buildings in a gesture of support for the Tel Aviv regime amid the ongoing bloodshed in the West Bank and Gaza.

The Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly meeting on Thursday over the Israeli regime’s relentless attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The meeting was scheduled at the suggestion of Islamic countries.

Washington has already blocked a UN Security Council statement on the issue, and supported Israel’s continuous bombardment of civilian areas in Gaza as part of the regime’s “right to self-defense”.

Israel’s heavy bombing campaign has already killed at least 219 Palestinians, including 63 children and 36 women, in the Gaza Strip. Over 1,500 people have also been wounded since the latest aggression flared on May 10.
