Iran nuclear deal

Iran and the remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal have held fresh negotiations in Vienna to revive the embattled accord. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi led Iran’s delegation in discussions with France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China. This is the third round of talks since diplomatic effort to salvage the deal began in early April. Speaking after the latest session, the Chinese envoy said there has been significant progress in talks but major differences still remain. He stressed that the US must remove its sanctions against Iran before Tehran return to its compliance with the nuclear agreement.

Attack on US convoy in Iraq

A convoy of US forces has reportedly come under attack in southern Iraq. Two improvised explosive devices went off on the route where the convoy was travelling in Dhi Qar province. That’s according to a security source. The two IEDs were exploded remotely. The blasts reportedly inflicted damage to one of the US vehicles, which was carrying military equipment. Attacks on US forces and their supply convoys in Iraq have increased in the past months, as anti-American sentiments run high there. The sentiments grew after the US assassinated a top Iranian general and a senior Iraqi commander near Baghdad in January last year.

Deadly protest in Chad

A protest against military rule in Chad has turned violent, leaving least five people dead and over two dozen others injured. Protesters hit the streets of the capital N'Djamena to denounce the army's takeover of power following the death of President Idriss Deby. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. Idriss Deby died last week during a battle with rebel groups in the country’s north. The military says it will hand over power to an elected government. It has also named Idriss Deby’s son as interim president before an election is held within 18 months. However several opposition politicians have called the move a coup and urged Chadians to take to the streets. Anti-French sentiment is also running high in the country with demonstrators blaming Paris for backing the Deby regime against the will of the people.
