US anti-Iran sanctions

Iran says the biggest obstacle to the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal is Washington’s unwillingness to remove sanctions, imposed by the former US administration. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says the US needs to end all sanctions it imposed, reimposed or relabeled following its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Araqchi stressed that Iran will only roll back its nuclear commitments once all sanctions are scrapped in a verifiable manner. Araqchi made the comments in an interview with Japan’s NHK public broadcaster. This week, he led Iran’s talks with the remaining signatories in Vienna to get the deal back on track. Tehran says, that's only possible if the US abides by its obligations stipulated in the UN-endorsed accord.

Yemen retaliatory strike

The Yemeni army says it has carried out fresh drone strikes successfully hitting targets in southern Saudi Arabia. Army spokesman, Yahya Saree, said the strikes targeted military hangars at Jizan airport and King Khalid air base near the city of Khamis Mushait. He said two Qasef- 2K  drones were used in the operation in response to Saudi Arabia’s aggression and continued siege of Yemen. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a Yemeni explosives-laden drone heading toward Khamis Mushait. Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a deadly war on Yemen in 2015 to reinstate a friendly regime there. Yemeni forces are pushing ahead with their retaliatory strike to force Riyadh to end its aggression and blockade on the impoverished country.

COVID-19 in Latin America

Latin America remains one of the hotspots of the coronavirus pandemic, with Brazil being the worst-hit nation in the region. The country recorded nearly 72,000 new infections Saturday as well as over 26,000 deaths. That puts its total infection tally at over 13.4 million and its deaths at over 350,000, the second worst globally after the US. Mexico also reported nearly 2,200 new Covid deaths, one of its biggest one-day tolls, as its total fatalities top 209,000. In Argentina, authorities tightened restriction movements after a record number of daily infections at over 19,000. The country has so far confirmed over 2.5 million cases and more than 57,000 deaths. Meanwhile, a new wave of infections has hit Ecuador which has so far recorded nearly 343,000 cases and over 17,000 fatalities.
