In pictures: Islamic Revolution turns 42

Forty-two years on, Iranians have turned out on the streets to commemorate an Islamic Revolution that put an end to decades of monarchical rule in the country.

In 1979, Imam Khomeini returned from exile and under his leadership, the Shah’s government was overthrown following a massive public uprising.

This year, countrywide rallies have been held, with people driving cars and motorbikes in a bid to observe health protocols as the country is fighting to curtail the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.
