Six Republican senators have crossed party lines to vote in favor of the constitutionality of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

Senators voted 56-44 that the trial is constitutional. The vote required only a simple majority unlike a vote for a conviction for which the liberals do not have the majority.

GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Mitt Romney (Utah), Ben Sasse (Neb.) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) had previously voted in favor of impeachment.

They were joined by Sen. Bill Cassidy, who had previously supported an effort to declare the trial unconstitutional.

“Trump’s team was disorganized, they did everything they could but to talk about the question at hand. And when they talked about it, they kind of glided over it, almost as if they were embarrassed of their arguments,” Cassidy told reporters at the Capitol. “Now if I’m an impartial juror and one side is doing a great job and the other side is doing a terrible job on the issue at hand, as an impartial juror, I’m going to vote for the side that did the good job.”

Trump is facing the impeachment trial over cheering his fans on Jan. 6 to storm the Capitol, where the lawmakers were busy certifying Biden’s  2020 victory in the 2020 presidential election.

The House impeached Trump a week later, just seven days before now President Joe Biden took the oath of office.

Trump is the only president to be impeached twice in the history of the United States.
