At least 28 people have been killed and many others wounded in two terrorist attacks in a crowded market in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, police and medical sources say.

Two assailants detonated their explosive vests inside a market in Baghdad’s Tayaran Square on Thursday, killing the 28 people and wounding 73 others, Iraq's al-Sumeria television reported, citing police and medical officials.

Police said the casualties could rise due to the magnitude of the blasts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the deadly attacks, but such assaults bear the hallmarks of those carried out by the remnants of the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group.

On December 9, 2017, Iraq’s former prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of military operations against the Daesh terrorist group in the Arab country.

Bomb attacks have become rare incidents in Baghdad since the defeat of Daesh. The last such assault took place in January 2018.

Daesh began a terror campaign in Iraq in 2014, overrunning vast swathes before the Iraqi army teamed up with volunteer forces and retook territory.
