Venezuela's US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido has once again tried to cause instability in the country by staging a protest vote. Guaido launched the so-called “popular consultation” by asking people to dismiss the legitimacy of the recent parliamentary elections and the presidency of Nicolas Maduro.

The ruling Party won more than two thirds of the parliamentary seats despite the opposition's boycott of the elections.

Although Guaido claimed that millions had taken part in the consultation, only a small number of people were seen at the polling stations. Government officials rejected Guaido's bid, saying he had no political leadership to lead such an event.
