Gas explosion in Ahvaz levels building, killing five

At least five people were killed and nine others injured in a gas explosion in the Iranian city of Ahvaz, the provincial capital of the southwestern Khuzestan province.

Ebrahim Qanbari, head of Ahvaz Municipality's Fire Fighting and Safety Service's Organization, told IRNA that four men and one woman had lost their lives in the incident which occurred at 0830 local time (GMT: 0500) on Sunday.   

Gas leakage was cited as the cause of the blast.

A two-story house in a local market place was leveled by the explosion. Neighboring shops were also damaged by the shock wave.

Qanbari said the search and rescue operation had been concluded.
