Ex-OPCW chief’s Syria testimony at UN blocked by UK, US and allies

The invitation came from the current president of the Council, Russia's representative Vassily Nebenzia, drawing immediate UK-led objection.

In the blocked testimony, obtained and published by investigative news and politics website, The Grayzone. Jose Bustani, a veteran Brazilian diplomat raises questions about the OPCW work, particularly expressing concerns about the investigation of the alleged chemical attack in Douma, Syria, in April 2018.

That was a reference to OPCW inspectors in the Douma investigation whom Bustani said are asking to meet with the organization’s current director general to present their suppressed evidence in a transparent manner.

The evidence in question is what OPCW inspectors found in 2018 that undermined the official narrative peddled by the US, UK and France who bombed Syria after accusing the government of president Bashar Al-Assad of dropping toxic gas in Douma.

Bustani, who lost his job in 2002 in a campaign orchestrated by former U.S. diplomat John Bolton, for facilitating inspections that stood in the way of the Bush administration’s drive to invade Iraq, also raised concerns about the organization’s integrity.

Established in 1997, the Hague-based OPCW says its mission is the permanent and verifiable elimination of chemical weapons. But the UK-led blocking of the former OPCW Director General’s testimony raises serious questions about whether or not the organization is living up to that mission, and lends support to Damascus’ argument that alleged Douma chemical attack was staged.
