Coronavirus pandemic is adding to the woes of Gaza's economy which has been battered by Israel’s blockade and pressure since 2007. The pandemic is threatening the health and socioeconomic welfare of nearly two million Palestinians living in Gaza.

COVID-19 has compounded the dire economic conditions in the Gaza Strip, which were moving from bad to worse before the pandemic. The Israeli blockade in place since 2007 has caused a sharp decline in the standards of living as well as the alarming levels of unemployment and poverty in the seaside sliver.

The Coronavirus pandemic has left a huge negative impact on Gaza’s economy and worsened the livelihoods of people in the tiny coastal enclave. According to the Palestinian NGO’s Network the pandemic will exacerbate the underlying humanitarian crisis that has gripped Gaza for years.

Lockdown measures to contain COVID-19 have had grave economic implications for all sectors in the Gaza Strip. The coronavirus has precipitated an economic downturn in all sectors in Gaza.

The pandemic has added to the substantial financial strain already felt by many families living in the Gaza Strip. 80 percent of the population in Gaza depends on unstable international assistance, lacking food security, hygiene resources, health care and electricity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to large-scale emergencies across the Gaza Strip, representing not only a public health crisis, but also a humanitarian and economic crisis.

Experts say the Coronavirus pandemic has brought the blockaded enclave’s economy to a virtual standstill, pushing more Palestinians into poverty and unemployment.
