Newly-elected Labor MP charged with harassment

Unlike the anonymous Tory MP accused of rape the Labor Party's Claudia Webbe has been named and shamed by the UK media

In the latest scandal to hit the British Parliament a Labor Party MP has been charged with harassment.

Claudia Webbe, 55, who was elected the MP for the Leicester East constituency in December 2019, has reportedly been charged with harassing a woman.

The offence she is accused of reportedly took place between September 01, 2018 and April 26, 2020.

In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS – the UK’s prosecuting authority), said it decided to charge Webbe with harassment after receiving a “file of evidence” from the Metropolitan Police.

According to the CPS, criminal proceedings against the Labor MP are now “active” pending a trial.

"It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings”, the CPS added.

For her part, Webbe has denied the charges, claiming she is “innocent of any wrongdoing” and that she looks forward to contesting the charges in court.

Webbe is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 11.

The public naming and shaming of Webbe has caused an outcry on social media, where users have contrasted the treatment meted out to the Labor MP with that of a Tory MP who is accused of rape.

In stark contrast to Webbe, the Tory MP continues to enjoy anonymity.
