Boris Johnson to chair COBRA meeting on Tuesday

Boris Johnson is coming under increasing pressure to introduce strong measures to contain an expected second wave of the coronavirus

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is set to chair a COBRA meeting on Tuesday morning (September 22) ahead of a widely-anticipated statement on the government’s next steps in containing a so-called second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

COBRA meetings, or Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms, refer to meetings by specialized committees tasked with coordinating the actions of government bodies in response to national crisis and emergencies.

The latest scheduled COBRA meeting will take place against a backdrop of strong warnings by the government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, that Britain could see a sharp rise in Covid-19 infections by the middle of next month.

According to Vallance, the UK could see up to 50,000 new Covid-19 cases a day by mid-October, which could potentially lead to around “200-plus deaths per day” in November.

The PM is expected to discuss the UK’s coronavirus response with the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland ahead of Tuesday’s COBRA meeting.

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has indicated that a package of new coronavirus restrictions will “almost certainly” be imposed in Scotland “within the next 48 hours”.

For his part, Johnson has previously indicated that he is loath to put the UK into a second national lockdown.

However, according to multiple reports Downing Street is considering introducing “temporary nationwide restrictions” with a view to “short-circuiting” the expected second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
