Colombian 'craftivist' making a statement on Corona-hit world
Colombian "craftivist" Edgar Alvarez is making a statement in Bogota, using his plastic artwork to raise awareness on those suffering during the pandemic.
Alvarez' coronavirus caricature can be spotted in nooks of the Colombian capital not far from where citizens etch out a life in street stalls as a way to make ends meet. In May, Colombia's jobless rate more than doubled to 24.5%, from 11.2% in the same month of 2019.
The Andean nation is also seeking to tame the spread of coronavirus. As of Tuesday (August 18), it has recorded over 477,000 coronavirus cases and more than 15,000 deaths.
Alvarez' "craftivism" has gone global with hundreds of thousands of fans on Facebook and Twitter in his "Se Lo Explico Con Plastilina" ("It's Explained Through Clay" in English ) pages. This local artist is making a name for himself abroad by seeking to explain current affairs and historical events in an engaging way.
His 2015 claymation entitled "Los Invisibles" touched on the problem of homelessness in the US city of Los Angeles.
With the world gripped by pandemic, Alvarez hopes his work can provide an animated lesson for some of the world's most pressing issues.
