Zarif pays tribute to anti-terror commanders before holding meetings with Iraqi official
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has paid tribute to assassinated commanders of the anti-terrorism fight in Iraq after he arrived in the country’s capital and before his scheduled meeting with the Iraqi officials.
Upon his arrival in Baghdad International Airport, Zarif first visited the site of the assassination where the convoy carrying Lt. Gen. Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ Quds Force, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and their companions was targeted by a US drone strike on January 3.
The assassination has returned to headlines following a series of interviews this month by Agnes Callamard, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, in which she denounced the US act as “unlawful”, angering Washington.
Callamard said the assassination set a “dangerous precedent,” placing the international community at edge of a cliff.
She called the attack “the first known incident” in which a state invokes what it calls “self-defense as justification for an attack against a government official outside a declared armed conflict."
Both commanders enjoyed deep reverence among Muslim nations over their endeavors in eliminating the US-sponsored Daesh terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.
