Venezuela’s government has expelled the head of the European Union (EU)’s mission to the country.

Isabel Brilhante has been given 72 hours to leave Venezuelan territory. The move is in response to the European body’s recent sanctions on high-ranking Venezuelan officials, including ministers, congressmen, and members of the Supreme Court of Justice.

The EU has claimed that Venezuela’s upcoming legislative elections are not being organized on legal terms.

Officials say the EU is following the line of the US regime change policy against Caracas. They say President Nicolas Maduro’s decision to expel the European diplomat was based on the reciprocity principle that rules international law.

Experts say the EU decision to impose sanctions because Venezuela does not organize its election the way the bloc prefers constitutes a lack of respect for the Latin American country’s sovereignty.

Caracas claims the expelling of the top European diplomat is a “tit-for-tat” measure in light of the sanctions by the EU on Venezuelan officials.
