UK government daily coronavirus briefings to end
The British government has announced it will stop its daily coronavirus briefings. A statement from 10 Downing Street proclaimed that this evening’s new conference will be the last to be held on a daily basis.
“We’ll continue to hold press conferences to coincide with significant announcements, including with the PM [Boris Johnson]”, the statement added.
The decision came on the heels of Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s widely expected decision to unlock wide swathes of the British economy.
Addressing the House of Commons earlier today, the PM announced that pubs, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers in England will be allowed to open from July 04.
Furthermore, the social distancing requirement has been reduced from 2 meters to “one meter plus”.
The reduction of the social distancing rule puts England squarely at odds with the other UK nations
Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford and Northern Ireland's Arlene Foster have all said the 2 meter rule will remain in place in their respective nations for the foreseeable future.
The ending of the daily coronavirus daily briefings is expected to create additional distance between the British government and local governments in Wales, Scotland and to a lesser extent in Northern Ireland.
The daily news conferences – held at Downing Street – were the centerpiece of the British government’s coronavius management strategy. Its absence is designed to signal a return to pre-COVID normality, something that is contested by local governments.
