Parliament speakers of China, Syria urge enhanced relations with Iran

Iran's newly-elected Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf

Speakers of Chinese and Syrian parliaments have sent separate congratulatory messages to their newly-elected Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, stressing their countries' determination to further boost parliamentary ties with the Islamic Republic.

In his message to Qalibaf, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Li Zhanshu said Beijing calls for the steady expansion of compressive and strategic relations with Tehran.

He added that Iran and China always pursue strategic and lasting ties regardless of regional and international developments.

Iranian lawmakers on Thursday overwhelmingly voted to elect the former Tehran mayor as speaker of the newly-inaugurated Parliament (Majlis).

The new parliament chief, 58, is replacing Ali Larijani, who served in the post from 2008 until May this year.

In another development, speaker of the People's Council of Syria Hammouda Youssef Sabbagh called for the continuation of his country's parliamentary cooperation with Iran and enhanced cordial relations between the two nations during Qalibaf's tenure.

He said the Iranian and Syrian parliaments should enhance relations at regional and international levels to serve the two nations' interests.

In a phone call with Turkey’s Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop on Friday, the new Iranian parliament speaker said the Islamic Republic and Turkey should further boost regional cooperation with the purpose of promoting peace and sustainable development.

Qalibaf stressed the importance of reinforcing unity and solidarity among Muslim nations to thwart the Israeli regime’s plots.
