Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has met with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad as well as his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem during a visit to Damascus.

Zarif, who is in the Syrian capital at the head of a political delegation for a one-day visit, held the meetings on Monday, the Foreign Ministry reported.

Upon arrival, the Iranian top diplomat was received by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad.

Earlier, it was reported that the trip would feature talks between the Iranian foreign minister and ranking Syrian officials on such issues as bilateral ties and regional developments as well as the latest political and field developments with regard to Syria's fight against terrorism.

The Islamic Republic and Syria enjoy deep and multi-faceted strategic relations that, among other things, have seen the former providing military advisory assistance to the Syrian army in the face of Takfiri terrorism and militancy since 2011.

The assistance together with aerial support by Russia, another Syria ally, has helped Damascus restore its sovereignty over the majority of the territory that it had lost during the foreign-fueled violence.
