Bolivian prisoners riot for health care amid pandemic fears in jail
Inmates at a southern Bolivian jail rioted on Saturday (April 11) to demand face masks and health care for the prison population, amid fears of a possible coronavirus outbreak in the prison.
Video images showed inmates rioting on top of the prison building in the city of Oruro. Riot police were called in and tear gas was used to quell the protest. According to local reports, two officers were injured by projectiles thrown from the jail.
Inmates told journalists they began their riot after a sick inmate died. But authorities deny negligence was behind the death.
Bolivia's prisoners are often overcrowded and inmates say the conditions inside are ripe for the spread of coronavirus.
This week the government announced that prisoners on low-level charges would be released from jail as part of measures to control the pandemic in the country's correctional facilities.
According to reports, at least 275 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Bolivia, with 20 reported deaths.
