The 2021 World Athletics Championships have been moved to July 2022 to accommodate the re-scheduled Tokyo Olympics games which have also been delayed due the coronavirus outbreak.

World Athletics confirmed in a statement that the track and field world Championships, which is usually held every two years, would now take place from July 15 to 24, 2022 in Oregon.

The move was expected as the original dates in August 2021 overlapped with the new dates for the Tokyo games which have been postponed by a year.

The new schedule will also prevent clashing with the 2022 commonwealth games in Birmingham, England, and the European Athletics Championships in Munich.

It will be the first World Athletics Championships in the United States whereas the previous event was held in Doha last year.
