Biden makes most gains, first Super Tuesday exit polls show
The first exit polls from the Super Tuesday of 14 US states voting to pick a Democratic nomination for the forthcoming presidential elections show former Vice President Joe Biden making the most gains in a face-off with Senator Bernie Sanders.
The initial results emerged as polls closed at 7:00 p.m. (0000 GMT) on Wednesday, with Biden winning the key state of Virginia and Sanders coming first in his home state of Vermont.
Biden also won Democratic presidential primary in North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Arkansas, scoring the biggest electoral prizes of Super Tuesday.
Sanders won Colorado and is also leading in the polls in California and Texas, where 415 and 228 delegates, respectively, are up for grabs.
Biden scored a major victory in the South Carolina primary on Saturday, and following the win, two of Biden’s moderate rivals — former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete uttigieg and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) — dropped out of the race and threw their support behind the former vice president.
Super Tuesday marked the debut of former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg on ballots, with the CNN saying the billionaire had won the Democratic caucuses in American Samoa, an unincorporated American territory in the South Pacific Ocean.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) are also competing for the Democratic nomination.
Tuesday’s contests award 1,357 delegates, or 34 percent of the total available.
