Officials say that floods in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province have claimed lives, demolished thousands of homes, schools, medical centers and businesses in towns and villages, and killed thousands of animals.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has ordered state-run bodies and NGOs to provide more aid to people affected by severe flooding in many cities and villages. This is while religious figures in the region have praised aid and rescue efforts.

Torrential rains and flash floods, which started on January 9, have caused economic losses to agricultural farms, subterranean canals, roads leading to farms, animal husbandry units and fish hatcheries. A preliminary estimate of damage caused by torrential rainfall to the agriculture sector tops tens of millions of dollars.

According to official figures, floods have ravaged some 30 percent of the province, with significant human and material costs. Even as search and rescue operations continue, the focus will be on rebuilding the shattered communities.
