The President-elect of Argentina Alberto Fernandez was sworn into office on Tuesday at the National Congress in Buenos Aires, while former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner took office as Vice President.

The Peronist leader arrived at the ceremony driving his own vehicle, waving through the window to the thousands of people who gathered on his route to show him their support.

Once at the National Congress, Fernandez entered the chamber pushing the wheelchair of the outgoing vice president, Gabriela Michetti.

The Argentinian leader swore "for God, the homeland and the holy gospels, to carry out the position of president of the nation with patriotism," the same words used by his vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

After Fernandez took was sworn in, the deputies of his party celebrated effusively, applauding and chanting from their seats in parliament. Former president Mauricio Macri gave Fernandez the presidential sash with the colours of the Argentinian flag.

In his first speech as president, Fernandez promised to “summon the unity of all Argentina, in pursuit of the construction of a new social citizen contract. A social contract that is fraternal and supportive.”
