Police doused protesters with a water cannon in Santiago on Friday (December 06) amidst an uptick in tensions at anti-government demonstrations in Chile.

Protesters faced off with police, throwing rocks at officers who then responded with tear gas and water cannon.

Protests that began over a hike in metro fares have at times unravelled into violent riots, looting and arson. But demonstrators say for the most part their movement has been peaceful as they push for efforts to reduce inequality in the South American nation.

The government has promised a raft of reforms to quell protesters' demands, from beefing up the minimum wage to topping off pensions.
