Trump hails Russia-Turkey safe zone in northern Syria

US President Donald Trump has hailed the safe zone in northern Syria established by Russia and Turkey in the wake of US withdrawal from the Kurdish-controlled region.

“Big success on the Turkey/Syria Border. Safe Zone created! Ceasefire has held and combat missions have ended. Kurds are safe and have worked very nicely with us. Captured ISIS prisoners secured. I will be making a statement at 11:00 A.M. from the White House. Thank you!” Trump said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The US withdrawal gave Turkey the green light to invade the region, which was followed by a US-backed ceasefire and a Russia-backed safe zone.

According to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, only 37 percent of voters support Trump’s decision, with some 20 percent saying they don’t have an opinion about it.

Among Democratic voters, 62 percent oppose it while 61 percent support Trump’s decision among Republicans.

“This week, 61 percent of Republicans say they support President Trump’s decision to remove US troops from Syria, compared to 56 percent who said the same last week,” said Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president. “The president’s [overall] standing among Republicans also remains strong, as 84 percent approve and 14 percent disapprove of his performance.”

Nearly 65 percent said they agree with the statement, “The US needs to be involved in foreign conflicts to support our allies, fight terrorism and maintain our foreign policy interests.”
