Israel has US presidential hopefuls in back pocket: Analyst

Mark Dankof, political analyst, speaking to Press TV

Israel maintains full control over the current contenders for the 2020 US presidential election, an American political analyst says, arguing that Washington’s support for the Tel Aviv regime will continue with full force no matter who wins the race for the White House.

Mark Dankof, a former US Senate candidate in San Antonio, said remarks by Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren that she might end the annual US aid to Israel if the regime does not stop its settlement activities belonged to the same category of “political gestures” that candidates make to win more votes.

"Everything is on the table," the Massachusetts Democrat said when asked about her position on Sunday.

She asserted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s construction of the settlements is against the US official policy of the so-called “two-state solution.”

“When Elizabeth Warren suggests that all is ‘on the table’ in regard to American money for Israel and Israeli settlements in illegal territories, it is quite obvious that with the 600,000 people already in these areas illegally… that whether we have a Republican or a Democratic president, a Republican Congress or a Democratic Congress, then all of this stuff is going to continue,” Dankof told PressTV on Monday.

“It is a very very old game, it is a very tired game at this particular point and with all of the military disaster and political blowback that the United States has had in the Middle East of pursuing these Israeli policies… this is an indication that when we talk about Israel and budgets, the United States has every reason on the basis of everything that has happened since the late 1940s to pull the plug on Israel completely,” the analyst further argued.

He said such remarks by Warren and other candidates never go beyond “political posturing” because if they ever really plan to deliver on such pledges they will be disqualified from the race.

Dankof noted that Warren and other Democratic candidates were as much under the influence of the Israel lobby as President Donald Trump.

“The candidates who have the best chance of being nominated, which at this point would appear to be Warren and [former Vice President] Joe Biden, are both in the back pocket of Israel and how true that is will become obvious if they are actually elected,” the analyst said.

The only Democrat who has “any sincerity at all” is Tulsi Gabbard, a Hawaii representative who has been labeled by former first lady Hillary Clinton a “Russian asset,” he added.

Dankof argued that Warren and other Democrats showed their true colors when they refused to defend Gabbard, who openly opposes US wars and calls for an end to Washington’s regime change policy, against Clinton.
