EU warns Turkey's Syria incursion risks Daesh resurgence

Following on from the move by the United States to abandon its Kurdish allies, during a debate in the European Parliament, EU legislators were highly critical of Ankara's military operation in northeastern Syria.

Concerns have been expressed over a possible new humanitarian and refugee crisis.

Some EU lawmakers are furious at the role the West has played in Syria and its position towards key actors.

The EU's call for restraint and de-escalation generated outrage.

Aside from the EU, the Brussels-based NATO alliance has also expressed concern Turkey's military action in Syria could further destabilize the region. But when it comes to Syria, some analysts say the West needs to take a step back.

This is clearly an awkward situation for the West because of course Turkey is a member of NATO and also has been negotiating membership of the European Union.

The situation with Turkey and Syria has been put on the agendas of an EU foreign affairs ministers' meeting due to take place next Monday in Luxembourg and an EU leaders' summit due to take place here next Thursday and Friday.
