Muslim family and modernity
Yaser Birjas is the Head of our Islamic Law and Theory Department at AlMaghrib Institute, Houston, Texas.
In 1997, he went to work as a relief programme aide to rebuild war-torn Bosnia. In 2000, he immigrated to the US where he served as an Imam at The Islamic Center in El Paso, Texas and a director of English programs in Da'wah and outreach for the Orland Park Prayer Center. He is currently serving as Imam of the renowned Valley Ranch Islamic Center in Irving, Texas, rapidly establishing himself as an invaluable leader of the Texan Muslim Community.
This episode is a brief section of Yaser Birjas speech at the Muslim American Society and the Islamic Circle of North America 16th Annual Convention in Chicago. Todays Muslim American family often sees a clash between different generations. Some members of the family may cling to tradition while other members are averse to it, opting for modernism. The challenge then is embracing modernity when it is in compliance with the Sharia and avoiding it when it contradicts Islam.
