Russia slaps sanctions against Ukraine

Russia on Thursday imposed a series of financial sanctions on hundreds of Ukrainian political elite. Relations between the two neighbors started to deteriorate in 2014 after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych who was supported by Moscow.

But it was not until later the same year when their diplomatic crisis took a new dimension and brought in new players. It was when Crimea voted in a referendum to unify with Russia.

A move that eventually triggered a deadly domestic conflict in eastern Ukraine, in Donbass region, which also wanted to unify with Russia.
