Amir Mahdizadeh from Iran wins silver in men's -60 kg karate

Iran’s Amir Mahdizadeh has pocketed the silver medal in the minus 60 kg category of Men’s Karate in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. 

Mahdizadeh lost the final 9-7 to his Indonesian rival in a match that saw controversial decisions being made by the referees. The Iranian made his way to the final after defeating opponents from the Philippines, Vietnam and Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Karate, Iran's Rozita Alipour won a silver medal in the minus 61 kg category. The final match between Alipour and her Chinese opponent finished 0-0 but the Chinese player was declared winner by the referees after the accumulation of penalties.

Elsewhere, Taravat Khaksar of Iran settled for silver after losing to her opponent in the final of the minus 55 kg category. Khaksar lost the match 4-0 to Zuyun Wen of Chinese Taipei. She overcame opponents from Afghanistan, Indonesia and China in the previous rounds.

In the medal standings, China lead the way with 74 gold and a total of 166 medals. Japan and South Korea are 2nd and 3rd on 39 and 26 gold medals respectively. Iran sit in 4th place with 14 gold, 14 silvers, 11 bronze and a total of 39 medals.The host nation Indonesia have just two gold medals less than Iran in 5th place.
