As the summer season approaches in Europe, thousands will attempt to make the dangerous crossing via the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa and the Middle East.
Once relatively accessible by Turkey, then more dangerously navigated via Libya, the clampdown on refugee crossing has forced many into ever more dangerous situations. With a noticeably hardening EU rhetoric that has attempted to contain the refugee problem before it gets to Europe, the latest sinking off the coast of Tunisia highlights the perils still faced by those determined to escape their conditions.
The spokesman for the International Organisation for Migration warned that the final number of missing was still not known. With the Libyan and Turkish routes now more difficult for refugees, the EU has also tightened its stance on those hoping to enter Europe via North Africa and surrounding areas. With the environment for those attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing now more hostile than ever, is the EU leaving African refugees alone to drown in the sea?
