Sudanese president endorses major cabinet reshuffle
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has approved a sweeping cabinet shake-up, which will affect nearly two dozen of its members, state media say.
Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) announced the reshuffle in a meeting headed by the president, reported the official news agency SUNA late Sunday.
The details of the reshuffle, which will include eight ministers, five ministers of state and 10 governors, will be released later on Monday, SUNA said.
NCP deputy chairman Faisal Hassan Ibrahim said that the party members discussed during the meeting ways to tackle the country’s economic woes by cutting costs and increasing the government’s income.
The party adopted several measures, including the reduction of government spending by 25 percent, he said.
The participants also explored various avenues to boost the government’s revenues through providing funds for the maintenance of oil refineries in order to increase production and exports.
Earlier this month, the president ordered the closure of 13 overseas diplomatic missions as part of the government’s fresh austerity measures.
In April, Bashir issued a presidential decree relieving Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour of his position.
Sudan’s economy received a heavy blow in 2011 after South Sudan separated from the north and took with it about 75 percent of Khartoum’s oil revenues.
