Macron warns US

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned his US counterpart Donald Trump against pulling out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Macron told German media that such a move can work for Trump’s domestic purposes in the short term. But the French president warned that it would be very insane in the medium to long term. Macron said leaving the agreement could open a Pandora’s Box, leading the US and its European allies into armed conflict with Iran. Trump has set a May 12 deadline for European signatories to the deal to fix it. He has threatened to withdraw if the changes he seeks are not implemented. On Thursday, Iran’s foreign minister said any renegotiation of the agreement is out of the question, warning that the US must accept the consequences if it withdraws from the deal.

Victims of Israeli violence

The United Nations Children's Fund says kids in the Gaza Strip are bearing the brunt of Israel’s violence against Palestinians. UNICEF says the escalating violence in Gaza has left children with physical injuries as well as growing signs of severe distress and trauma. According to the UN agency, half of all the children in the region depend on humanitarian assistance, and one in four of them needs psychosocial care. Israeli forces have killed several children and injured hundreds more in largely peaceful protests over the past five weeks. UNICEF also called on Israelis to curb the use of lethal force against unarmed demonstrators and keep children from harm.

OPCW completes Douma investigation

Chemical weapons inspectors who were dispatched to the Syrian city of Douma to look into an alleged gas attack there have completed their investigation. The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman also said the inspectors were guaranteed a full and unrestricted access to all the areas and buildings they were interested in. Igor Kona-shenkov further questioned the veracity of the incident’s video filmed by the members of the White Helmets organization. Earlier on Friday, an unnamed diplomatic source said a team of OPCW experts had returned to the Netherlands from their mission. Dozens were killed in the reported chemical attack that took place on April the seventh. The US and its allies put the blame on the Syrian government. That’s a charge Damascus and Moscow flatly deny.

Anger at Trump’s policy

The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced that it will terminate temporary protections for Honduran immigrants living in the United States. The US government says the conditions that justified protected status for Honduran immigrants no longer exist. The plan, which would leave some 57,000 people vulnerable to deportation, gives Honduran immigrants 20 months to return to their home country. The Honduran Foreign Ministry expressed its regret over the cancellation of the TPS program. The Honduran ambassador to the US also said his country cannot handle the deportation of the immigrants. Hondurans were granted temporary protection status by the US in 1999 following a devastating hurricane. Meanwhile, representatives of immigrant rights groups and labor unions have gathered to denounce the new decision.

Pakistan protests

Members of the Hazara Community in the Pakistani city of Quetta have ended their days-long protests against the recent killings of their people. The Muslim community continues to live in fear of more attacks as they say the perpetrators have not been arrested or punished. Our correspondent, Hamza Ameer, has more from Islamabad.

Lebanon elections

The Lebanese head to the polls on Sunday to choose their parliamentarians for the first time in nearly a decade. The vote will be held according to a new electoral law which will see proportional representation implemented for the first time in Lebanon. Press TV’s Rana Aladdin has more on the final preparations ahead of the general elections.

US-China trade friction

US President Donald Trump says China has become “very spoiled with US trade wins”, as Washington and Beijing hold high-stakes trade negotiations. On his Twitter page, Trump said he will meet with the US delegation after they are back from China to determine the results of the talks. Delegations from Washington and Beijing held a two-day negotiation in China. The two sides discussed a range of issues, including expanding exports to China, protection of intellectual property rights, and the tariff dispute. The world’s two leading economies are locked in a trade dispute after Washington imposed tariffs on imports, which were directly aimed at China. Since then, Beijing has imposed its own tariffs on US goods.

US spying

A new report by the US National Security Agency says it collected a massive amount of phone call records during 2017. The report says the US spy agency collected 534 million records of phone calls and text messages from American telecommunications providers. The figure shows a sharp increase in comparison with the 151 million calls recorded in 2016. According to the report, the metadata records include the numbers and time of the calls, not their contents. The tally, however, remains far less than an estimated billions of records collected per day under the NSA's old bulk surveillance system, which was exposed by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden in 2013.
