Ankara trio talks

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has officially welcomed his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, to Ankara ahead of a summit on Syria. A third party to join the talks is Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who had arrived in Ankara a day before. The three presidents are the guarantors of a recent ceasefire in Syria. They will discuss the country’s conflict, days after the milestone liberation of the Ghouta suburb of Damascus. They had earlier managed to establish de-escalation zones and humanitarian pauses, helping thousands of civilians escape combat zones. The new rounds of talks are likely to focus on the same topics, while also addressing the current evacuation of militants from Eastern Ghouta.

‘Daesh defeat is US defeat’

Iran’s Defense Minister, Amir Hatami, says the defeat of the Daesh terror group is equal to the defeat of the United States in the region. Hatami, at the same time, warned that the defeat of Daesh may unleash a new wave of violence. The Iranian defense minister also said Western support, including arms and funds, for terror groups must also be stopped in order to defeat them. Hatami hailed anti-terror cooperation between Iran and Russia, and said Tehran favors greater role by Moscow in this regard. The Iranian minister was speaking at the Moscow Conference on International Security.

US-Mexico border security

Mexico is seeking clarification from the US government after President Donald Trump’s pledge to deploy the military to its border. The US president gave no details on the size or mission of a military border deployment. Amnesty International says the plan could cost the lives of the most vulnerable people. The rights group says Trump has dismissed the desperate situation of people fleeing violence and persecution. It says the US government has an obligation to protect those seeking refuge and respect their right to claim asylum. Amnesty says to deny them that right would be a serious violation of both US and international law.

Slamming US Syria policy

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani says some countries, including the US, support terrorist groups like Daesh in Syria, which serve their interests.

France strike

The French brace themselves for a second day of chaos as rail workers continue with their strikes. The walk-out is led by unions, which oppose President Emanuel Macron’s across-the-board reforms. Air France workers, garbage collectors, and energy workers have joined in on the rolling strikes which are planned for the next three months. This is the biggest challenge to Macron’s presidency since he took office nearly a year ago. On the first day of the strikes, protests turned violent as people clashed with police in Paris. Several people have been arrested.

Iran hailing Palestinian resistance

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says resistance and struggle are the only ways to save oppressed Palestine. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei described the resistance as a remedy for healing the wounds of Palestinians suffering under decades of Israeli occupation. Iran’s Leader said any move toward negotiation with the usurper and deceitful regime is a big unforgivable mistake, which delays the victory of Palestinians, and leaves them with more sufferings. Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in response to a letter from Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas. Iran’s Leader said, in the wake of the recent Zionist atrocities against Palestinians, the Islamic Republic once again stresses that Palestine and its cause are the pivotal issues. Ayatollah Khamenei said resistance against the global arrogance and its plots will lead to the authority and dignity of the Islamic Ummah.

EU youth unemployment

Newly-published data show youth unemployment levels are still out of control in ten EU countries. The European Commission has described the situation as unacceptable and called on the bloc members to do more to tackle joblessness. Jerome Hughes has this report from Brussels.
