Mexico must stop immigrant caravans: Trump
US President Donald Trump has called on Mexico to stop immigrant “caravans” trying to enter the United States.
“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large ‘Caravans’ of people enter their country,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday.
“They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws.....”
On Sunday, Trump claimed in a tweet that “caravans” of immigrants were entering the United States. He made the comment after a segment on “Fox & Friends” said an "army of migrants" was marching from Honduras.
The US president on Monday also said that there will be no deal to legalize the status of young adult immigrants called Dreamers and blamed Democrats for the failure to reach a deal on recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon... No longer works,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
“Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!”
“...Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People,” Trump said.
“Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job. Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!”
DACA is an executive action taken by former President Barack Obama that allowed undocumented immigrants who came to the US under the age of 16 to apply for protection from deportation. After a background check, those individuals were able to get renewable two-year permits to work and study in the US, as well.
Since it went into effect in 2012, roughly 800,000 people were protected by the program, and roughly 700,000 had active DACA protections in September 2017, when the Trump administration announced its end.
Trump has also repeatedly called for a wall on the southern border, which was a signature promise of his 2016 campaign.
During his campaign for presidency, Trump suggested that illegal Mexican immigrants in the US were “murderers” and “rapists.” He also promised to build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it. Mexican officials have adamantly rejected the payment for the proposed wall.
