Trump touts role in making Christmas merry 'again'
US President Donald Trump has boasted about his perceived role in making Americans say Merry Christmas again, playing into his campaign promise to stand up to the "war on Christmas."
"People are proud to be saying Merry Christmas again. I am proud to have led the charge against the assault of our cherished and beautiful phrase," Trump tweeted late Sunday night on what appeared to be a busy Christmas Eve at his “winter White House” in Florida.

Sunday's tweet echoed the comments Trump made in October at the Family Research Council's Values Voter Summit in Washington.
“We’re getting near that beautiful Christmas season that people don’t talk about anymore. They don’t use the word Christmas because it’s not politically correct," he said to cheers. “You go to department stores and they’ll say 'Happy New Year,' or they’ll say other things and it’ll be red, they’ll have it painted."
"Well, guess what? We’re saying 'Merry Christmas' again,” Trump said back then.
Earlier in the day, Trump wished US troops who were spending the holiday overseas a “very, very merry Christmas,” adding that the nation was saying “merry Christmas, again, very, very proudly.”
"Today and every day, we're incredibly thankful for you and for your families," he told the troops during a video conference with soldiers. "Your families have been tremendous. Always underappreciated, the military families. The greatest people on Earth."

The president and his wife, Melania Trump, also released an official photo on Christmas Eve, showing them making phone calls to children across the country.
Trump has long seized on the "war on Christmas" to rally support among evangelicals and Christian conservatives.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed that people were no longer saying "Merry Christmas" because they believed it was not “politically correct.”
