WHO warning on Yemen

The World Health Organization is warning about a new wave of cholera in Yemen, where a Saudi blockade is pushing the nation deeper into a humanitarian crisis. According to the organization’s Yemen representative, a cholera epidemic could break out at the beginning of the rainy season in March next year. Nevio Zagaria says 35 districts in Yemen have been reporting cholera with high attack rates in communities. Over two thousand Yemenis have died of cholera since the epidemic began in April. The cholera epidemic in Yemen comes at a time when 8 million people there face famine. Meanwhile, the Saudi blockade and airstrikes have destroyed the country’s medical services, and caused severe shortages of drinking water and medicine.

US provoking North Korea

North Korea’s ruling party has slammed planned joint aerial war games by the United States and South Korea on the Korean peninsula. A ruling party newspaper described the joint drills as an all-out provocation against Pyongyang. It also warned that the upcoming air maneuvers could lead to a nuclear war. Some 230 aircraft are involved in the five-day exercises which are set to begin on Monday. Tensions have increased in the region since North Korea successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile which it says can target the entire US continent. Pyongyang has repeatedly said it will not relinquish its nuclear deterrence and missile capability unless Washington and its regional allies end their hostile policy toward the country.

Ukraine protest

A protest has been held in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, calling for the impeachment of President Petro Poroshenko. Demonstrators argue that he has not fulfilled his campaign pledges and therefore should step down. Lena Savchuk reports.

Jordan warns US on Jerusalem al-Quds

Jordan has warned the US against Washington’s possible recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital. In a tweet, Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, says he has spoken with his American counterpart, Rex Tillerson, about dangerous consequences of the move. Safadi stresses that such a declaration would infuriate the Arab and Muslim world. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has said no decision for such a move has been made yet. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump has also pledged to move the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds. Trump's plans have angered Palestinians who say East Jerusalem al-Quds is the capital of their future state.

Honduras disputed vote

In Honduras, thousands of people have rallied to back opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla following days of unrest over a delayed and disputed presidential vote count. The demonstrators marched through the capital Tegucigalpa. Addressing the crowd, Nasralla called on the armed forces to disobey their leaders and urged his supporters to continue protests. He has accused his rival President Juan Orlando Hernandez of trying to steal the election by manipulating the polling results. Hundreds have been arrested in violent protests that have left at least three dead following the November 26 vote. This after the tally from the presidential race stalled without a clear winner. Under the official count, Hernandez had nearly 43 percent of the vote while Nasralla had 41.4 percent, with 95 percent of votes tallied.

OIC US warning

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has expressed concern over the US’s possible move to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital. The OIC has issued a statement saying Washington’s plan is contrary to international law, as it would breach the UN Security Council’s resolution 478. The resolution calls for withdrawal of diplomatic missions from Jerusalem al-Quds. President Donald Trump pledged to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during his presidential campaign last year. The plan has angered Palestinians, who say East Jerusalem al-Quds is the capital of their future state.

France protest

French security forces have clashed with demonstrators, who were protesting against police brutality in the capital Paris. The protesters marched through Gare du Nord train station and chanted slogans demanding justice for a black man who was allegedly killed at the hands of the police last month. Police used tear gas to push the protesters out of the building. The black young man known as Massar D., whose full name was not revealed, died after spending a week in a coma. He sustained a heart attack, reportedly during an arrest by the police at the Gare du Nord station. Protest organizers say the police are lying to the public and called for the truth to be revealed.
