‘US seeking to destabilize Syria’

Secretary General of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has criticized the United States for assisting Daesh Takfiri terrorists through American bases in Syria. Nasrallah noted that the United States prevents the total annihilation of Daesh by blocking the advance of Syrian Army and resistance groups toward the positions occupied by the terrorist group. To discuss the issue, Press TV has interviewed Adam Garrie, managing editor of The Duran from London, and Brent Budowsky, The Hill columnist from Washington DC.

Adam Garrie blamed the US policies for the prolongation of the Syrian conflict and said Washington’s ultimate goal is to destabilize Syria and overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Since American authorities “want Syria destroyed and eliminated,” the United States should be considered as part of the problem, rather than the solution to the Syrian conflict, the analyst said.

“Daesh was just one of many tools in this blood-soaked toolbox that the United States, military apparatus and deep state have been using to try to destabilize governments throughout the Arab world for decades,” Syria in particular, he argued.

Pointing out to the Americans’ motives in destabilizing Syria, Garrie said, “The reason that the United States is vocally upset about the victory that Iran and Hezbollah have scored in Syria is because this disallows the United States from bifurcating, Balkanizing [and] annexing parts of Syria.”

According to the analyst, the US plan to enforce an “illegal regime change in Damascus” did not work, because Syria mobilized its forces to fight the terrorists aided and abetted by Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United States.

However, Brent Budowsky disagreed and dismissed the idea that the US is not fighting the Takfiri terrorists in Syria, insisting that President Donald Trump, his predecessor Barack Obama and American military officials have all been seeking to “destroy” and “eliminate” Daesh.

He also observed that “a military aggression by Russia is not going to make anybody’s life better,” because it has been invited by Assad to "let him continue his mass murder."

Syria has been gripped by a large-scale foreign-sponsored militancy for more than six years now. Russia has been requested by the government in Damascus to support the Syrian military campaign against the terror groups since September 2015.
