UN addressing Rohingya plight 'like a talk show: scholar
An expert says the UN Security Council should go beyond addressing the Rohingya plight like a talk show, calling on the world community to apply a punitive approach rather than a euphemistic one towards the ongoing genocide against Muslims.
In an interview with Press TV on Thursday, Dr. Maung Zarni, a non-resident research fellow at Genocide Documentation Center of Cambodia, denounced what is “essentially and effectively a state- sponsored, premeditated and orchestrated genocide of the Royingya people over the last 40 years."
He said the lack of concrete measures to end the persecution of the Rohingya lies in the fact that rights organizations and even the UN chief are using “euphemism” when they describe the ongoing atrocities by the Myanmar regime.
The rights bodies, he said, need to call the situation by its legal name that is the “crime against humanity,” just the way the Human Rights watch (HRW) addressed it, and urge the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take up the case.
If the Security Council cannot establish consensus for taking concrete measures to end the genocide in Myanmar, bilateral measures by world governments such as the US and the UK and Muslim countries possess the capacity to put the regime in Myanmar under pressure, he added.
