Iran’s medal haul at Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games climbs to 103

Iranian sportsmen and women have managed to grab ten more medals to lift the country’s medal count to 103 at the ongoing 5th edition of Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan.

On Monday, Iranian freestyle wrestler Iman Sadeghi Koukandeh overcame his Turkmen opponent Saparmyrat Myradow 11-0 in the final bout of men’s 61-kilogram weight category, and struck the gold medal.

Ezzatollah Akbari Zarinkolaei also downed Umidjon Ismanov from Uzbekistan 9-2 in the 86-kilogram weight division, and snatched the gold medal.

Furthermore, Saeid Dadashpour Kerikalaei and Yadollah Mohebbi got two bronze medals in the men’s 70-kilogram and 125-kilogram classes.

Iranian weightlifter Homayoun Teymouri finished competitions in the men’s over 105-kilogram weight category tied on an aggregate of 430 kilograms, and claimed the bronze medal.

Uzbek and Turkmen competitors Rustam Djangabaev and Hojamuhammet Toýçyýew landed in the first and second overall slots with 442 and 431 kilograms respectively.

Additionally, Iranian kickboxer Mostafa Pourfaraj overwhelmed his Iraqi rival Hayder al-Asadi 11-2 in the final fight of the minus 69-kilogram point fighting competitions, and received the gold medal.

Iran women's national futsal team also thrashed the Chinese side 5-1 in the third-place play-off, and earned the bronze.

The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which is the 5th edition of the continental tournament, opened in the Turkmen capital city of Ashgabat on September 17, and will finish on September 27.

Turkmenistan is on the top of the medal count table with 231 medals (85 gold, 65 silvers and 81 bronzes).

China has claimed the second spot with 81 medals (35 gold, 24 silvers, 22 bronzes), while the Islamic Republic of Iran is on the third with a total of 103 medals (26 gold, 18 silvers and 59 bronzes).

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Kyrgyzstan have earned the 4th to 10th places respectively.
