Authorities in Mexico have discovered the headless bodies of three police officers in a suspected gang-related slaughter in the country’s south.

A local official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, made the announcement on Saturday, saying that the decapitated bodies bore signs of torture and belonged to three municipal police officers who had been found in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco.

The official said the three victims, among them a woman, had been kidnapped from a nearby municipality in Veracruz State a day earlier.

The motive behind the slayings was unclear; however, the perpetrators were believed to be part of a criminal gang actively operating in the two neighboring states. Veracruz and Tabasco lie on Mexico’s Gulf Coast, an area long ravaged by drug smugglers and people traffickers.

Mexico has been dealing with the threat posed by drug cartels in recent years. Over 100,000 people have lost their lives or gone missing in drug-related violence across Mexico since 2006.
