A Yemeni man has been arrested and charged in the US with attempting to provide Daesh (ISIL) with material support, according to officials and documents.

Mohamed Rafik Naji, who lives in New York City, was charged on Monday after promising to help Daesh to carry out an attack in Times Square, read a criminal complaint released Monday.

Naji, 37, "expressed support for staging an attack in Times Square" during a conversation with an undercover FBI agent, it added.

"They want an operation in Times Square, reconnaissance groups already put out a scene, the Daesh (ISIL) already put up scenes of Times Square ... I said that was an indication for whoever is smart to know," Naji told the informant on July 19.

Times Square was the site of a failed terrorist attempt in 2010 when a 30-year-old Connecticut resident tried to blow up a car bomb.

Naji allegedly traveled to Yemen in 2015 in order to join the Takfiri group, but failed and returned to the United States.

Following his return and after a Daesh attack in the French city of Nice that killed 86 people and injured over 400 others, he pledged allegiance to the terrorist group.

Several people have been arrested and charged in the US with either attempting to join the group or providing support for the terrorists.

Daesh, which was initially created and funded by the US and its regional allies to destabilize the Syrian government and the Middle East region, has claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in Europe and the US.

On September 17, a man in the US state of Minnesota was killed by police after stabbing 8 people in a shopping center, an attack that was later claimed by Daesh.

The knife-wielding attacker, who was dressed in a private security uniform, went on a rampage inside a mall in St. Cloud before being gunned down by an off-duty police officer.
