US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has vowed to work with his party rival Hillary Clinton to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in the November election.

Sanders, however, did not formally pull out of the race for the White House and did not endorse Clinton during his speech on Thursday in Burlington, Vermont.

“The major political task that we face in the next five months is to make certain that Donald Trump is defeated and defeated badly,” Sanders said. “And I personally intend to begin my role in that process in a very short period of time.”

Many Democrats have urged Sanders to drop out of the US presidential race now that Clinton, the former secretary of state, is the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

But Sanders’s advisers say he wants assurances from Clinton that she will fight for his campaign ideals before he offers his support as well as the support of millions of his supporters.

Throughout the speech, Sanders repeated his critiques of the economic, racial and environmental inequalities in the United States.

“I also look forward to working with Secretary Clinton to transform the Democratic Party so that it becomes a party of working people and young people, and not just wealthy campaign contributors: a party that has the courage to take on Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry, the fossil fuel industry and the other powerful special interests that dominate our political and economic life,” Sanders said.

“Defeating Donald Trump cannot be our only goal,” he said. “We must continue our grass-roots efforts to create the America that we know we can become. And we must take that energy into the Democratic National Convention on July 25 in Philadelphia.”

Sanders also encouraged his supporters to run for “school boards, city councils, county commissions, state legislatures and governorships.”

“We need new blood in the political process, and you are that new blood,” he said. “I have no doubt that with the energy and enthusiasm our campaign has shown that we can win significant numbers of local and state elections if people are prepared to become involved.”
