Syria declares 'regime of calm' in two major areas

The Syrian military has announced a Regime of calm in Latakia and Damascus starting from April 30th. The US and Russia will reportedly guarantee the truce. There has been an upsurge in violence despite a UN-brokered ceasefire in Syria.
At least 15 people have been killed as foreign-backed militants fired a barrage of shells on a mosque in the Syrian city of Aleppo. According to Syrian media, nearly 30 worshippers were also wounded in the attack in the Bab Faraj neighborhood.
Italian anti-government protesters have engaged in violent clashes with the police in the city of Pisa. At least two people reportedly suffered head injuries and several others were rounded up by the police. Protesters had gathered to criticize the job and housing situation.
Russia and China have expressed their opposition to the planned deployment of a U-S anti-missile system to South Korea. Foreign ministers of the two countries warned that the deployment of THAAD system won’t help resolving the tension in the Korean peninsula and the dispute should be settled through dialog.
Around 20 protesters have been arrested outside a campaign rally for U-S Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in the state of California. Demonstrators held signs as well as Mexican and American flags to protest Trump. Trump has caused widespread anger among the Latin Americans living in the US with his anti-migrant comments.
A South African judge says President Jacob Zuma should face prosecution for some 800 charges of corruption dating back to 19-99. The previous prosecutor general dropped the charges in 2009 on grounds that tapped phone calls used as the evidence in the court showed political interference in the case.
More than 300 people have died in a severe heatwave in India. Several states in various parts of the subcontinent recorded temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius. The traditionally hottest months of May and June are yet to come.
Voting is underway in Iran’s run-off elections with 68 remaining seats at the parliament up for grabs. 17 million people are eligible to vote. The elections take place in 21 provinces where over 50 constituencies were left undecided in the first round on February 26.
