57% of Americans oppose Trump's Islamophobic proposal

Nearly six-in-10 Americans oppose Donald Trump's outrageous proposal to bar Muslims from entering the United States, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

A poll shows a majority of Americans are against plans proposed by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to bar Muslims from entering the United States.

The survey, conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, finds that 57 percent of adults in the US oppose the idea.

The poll, released on Thursday, also indicates that 25 percent of respondents are in favor of the GOP frontrunner's views against Islam and Muslims, making one US citizen in four supporting Trump’s controversial notion.

The survey has also examined politicians’ stance regarding Trump, showing 42 percent of Republicans back a ban on Muslims, while 36 percent oppose it.

According to the survey, 41 percent of US citizens find Trump's campaign statements insulting while 59 percent are in favor of Muslims.

Trump ignited a political firestorm on Monday by proposing a “total and complete” ban on all Muslims entering the US.

His statement, which has drawn widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally, came in response to the mass shootings in San Bernardino, California, last week, in which a married couple described as "radicalized" by authorities killed 14 people.

On Tuesday, Trump said he was not ashamed of his proposal for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."

“Not at all,” Trump said in an interview with ABC News. “We have to do the right thing.”

Trump told ABC News on Tuesday that disallowing Muslims from entering the US would be a “short-term” measure until elected American leaders can “figure out what is going on.”

He said the United States should bar Muslims from entering the US as soon as possible.

“We don’t know what’s happening. We have a president that doesn’t have a clue. We need toughness and smartness and we have to do it quickly,” he said.

Trump stated that he is not a bigot as many commentators are calling him. “I’m a person that has common sense. I’m a smart person. I know how to run things. I know how to make America great again.”
