Aid groups critical of France's plans for refugee camp near Calais

Aid groups have criticized France’s plans for a refugee camp around the port city of Calais, saying that the government is turning it into a prison in all but name.

France has promised to provide more humanitarian assistance to the camp called the New Jungle, but it also wants to deploy 460 more police officers to patrol the area. Paris plans to set up 120 tents that will house only 1500 refugees. Whereas according to two aid groups working at the site, around 6000 refugees are currently living in life-threatening conditions there. They've labeled the government’s proposals insufficient, saying the refugees don't have access to basic needs such as food, water or stable housing. The aid groups also say the government will most likely carry out a large-scale eviction in the next months.
